A discourse community is a group of people or a community of people that share a common interest in ideas. In these groups, people can choose to communicate and never physically be in the same space. My understanding of this new topic to me is that discourse community is similar to high school “cliques”. In these groups, people share an interest or the same hobbies such as the jocks, cheerleader, nerds, class clowns, and so on. I find that when people share the same interest they are more likely to get along. This also gives them a better opportunity to meet and get to know each other. Personally, I have found my friends or discourse community all share common interest or hobbies.
I find discourse community interesting because it is the way in which people communicate and interact. I also find it interesting that people do in-depth research on how people communicate in groups. I have never thought of groups of communication in this way. I think discourse communication is throughout college campus. I only know a few students at UCBA and the few students I do know share a common interest, the same major. I think college campuses are grouped by majors and extracurricular activities. I know these people because we share the same classes. My discourse community at UCBA are students who are education majors. Other groups of discourse communities are sports groups, clubs, gym members, co-workers, and many more. The topic of discourse community leaves me with questions. What is a benefit of being in these groups or communities? Do these groups define who you are? Can you be multiple communities? How Do these groups effect social life in schools?
